Cartonnage Wonder Chest, Part 2

At last, my Fabric Wonder Chest is finished! As with other fabric box kits I've made, I'm not showing details of the creation process because this is a course I paid for, and I don't want to take anything away from the course creator. But I'm excited to share the finished piece.

I went a little more whimsical with this fabric box, and I think it turned out great. Here is the completed chest from an angle so you can see the coordinating fabric on the side of the lid and the clasp:

And here's a view straight on:

I love this floral fabric — it's so fun and fairytale-esque, but still really elegant and pretty. And I love the coordinating fabrics I chose. You can see all four fabrics on this interior shot:

I think the colors and patterns work really well together. Here's a closeup of the two bottom drawers pulled out:

The fabric on the inside of the drawers and the upper tray is called Floral Vine Mauve and is part of the Simple Life Keepsake Calico collection at Joann's. I used it on the jewelry box I made for my dad's wife as well. I liked it here because it was subtle and nicely complemented my main fabric.

Here's the middle drawer pulled out:

I did that one in the yellow and teal because they're just so pretty together. Here's one last shot to show the removable tray resting on the lower lid:

I'm happy to have this one complete. It definitely helped to work on it a little at a time. I can't imagine trying to do this chest in one go over a long weekend. But spread out over a few weeks, it was very manageable. And really, it was a lot of fun. I made a few small mistakes, but on the whole, I think it turned out pretty well.

If I ever made another one, I think the only change I would make would be to add handles to the sides. The chest is quite large — 10" wide by 9¼" high by 6¾" deep — and somewhat heavy, so it's a bit cumbersome to lift. Some handles on the sides would really help. But alas, it's too late at this point.
