This is just a quick update on where my projects are at. For the embroidered table runner, I've begun my second practice piece on the Sotema linen. I've finished the Hardanger and drawn thread work and transferred my pattern using the prick-and-pounce method:
I didn't do a super great job transferring the pattern, but I'm trying to figure out how detailed of a transfer I need to make, and this seemed like a good way to find out. I've just started to do some stem stitching on the upper left.
But I can already tell I don't want to use this fabric. Don't get me wrong — it was great for the drawn thread work. It was definitely easier with the smaller thread count (though part of that may be because I've had quite a bit of practice now and am really getting the hang of it). But the linen feels kind of stiff and starchy, and I don't like that the holes between the woven threads are larger. It's just not what I want for this table runner. So I'll keep going with the practice piece to try out my new design elements and stitches, but I've already ordered a fat half of the Graziano Florence linen to embroider the final table runner on.
I've also continued working on my Japanese Embroidery piece. I've gotten a few more tips from people but am no closer to getting a teacher. I have to say, they make it awfully hard to get a teacher, what with all the so-called rules about who can teach you based on whose kit you're doing and who you've ever spoken to before. It's been frustrating enough that it was kind of putting me off JE, but it's so beautiful that I've decided to persevere anyway. If I can find a good teacher, great; if not, I'll go it alone. (Hopefully the last teacher I contacted will be able to find an online solution, but still no word.) Anyway, here's what I've done so far:
It's coming along, but it's still the most difficult embroidery I've ever done. I'm sure I will gradually figure it out, but it would be nice to be able to ask someone specific questions and see certain things demonstrated. Alas, it's not to be at the moment.
And finally, I forgot to post that my Evertite stretcher bars arrived a couple of weeks ago:
They seem nice and very sturdy. They were a little tough to fit together, but I eventually got them there. However, I ordered 7" x 9" bars, not realizing how tiny a piece that would really be. It's too small for any of my current project ideas, so I haven't actually tried them yet. But I will eventually find a small project they'll work for, and then I can test them out.
Also, I got a notice this weekend from Needle Needs that they have shipped my Millennium Frame! Oh, the joy! It's supposed to arrive this week. Since I had heard dire stories of people waiting over 18 months for theirs, I am relieved that it's only been a little over four months for me. I am super excited to try them out. If I like them as much as I hope/think I will, I may order an extra set or two of stretcher bars since the wait time seems to have gone down significantly.
